Our story

1995

A museum of microorganism cultures was created at the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology LNU named after I. Franko

2008

The beginning of the screening program for biologically active substances of actinomycetes from natural biotopes of Ukraine

2016

A structural subdivision of LNU named after I.Franka for the Collection of antibiotic-producing microorganisms

2002

The museum was reorganized into the Collection of cultures of microorganisms - producers of antibiotics, which received the status of a scientific object, which is a National Property of Ukraine

2012

The first new antibiotics from actinomycetes of the Crimean Peninsula were discovered

2018

"Collection of cultures of microorganisms - producers of antibiotics" becomes a participant in scientific research of Ukraine in the Antarctic.

The collection of cultures of microorganisms producing antibiotics (MCCAP), located at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv (IFNUL), was established in 1995 at the Department of Genetics and Biotechnology. It initially functioned as a museum of microorganism cultures within the research laboratory NDL-45, dedicated to “Genetics, Selection, and Genetic Engineering of Antibiotic Producers.”

In 2002, the Microorganism Museum was reorganized into the MCCAP and by Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 472-r of August 19, 2002, it was officially included in the State Register of Scientific Objects Constituting National Heritage of Ukraine.

In 2008, a new research direction was launched: the study of the microbial biodiversity of Ukrainian biotopes.

In 2016, by decision of the Academic Council of IFNUL, a separate structural unit named “Collection of Cultures of Microorganisms Producing Antibiotics ” was officially established.

In 2018, the MCCAP began investigating the microbiota of the Antarctic as part of the State Target Scientific and Technical Program for Antarctic Research.

Today, the MCCAP holds approximately 4,000 specimens of microorganism strains, as well as DNA constructs. Among them are over 3,800 natural isolates of actinomycetes, myxobacteria, and other microorganisms. The systematized portion, comprising approximately 1,200 natural isolates, is represented by 42 bacterial genera, among which two new actinomycete species have been described: Streptomyces explomaris (Lv 166) and Mumia qirimensis (Lv 822). The MCCAP also houses four newly described actinomycete genera: Amorphoplanes, Paractinoplanes, Synbioplanes, and Winogradskya. Furthermore, 30 new natural compounds produced by actinomycetes isolated from the Crimean Peninsula have been described within the MCCAP research framework.
